Before talking about the benefits of Giloy, its pertinent to have a brief introduction of the herbaceous vine with botanical name Tinospora Cordifolia and Sanskrit name Amrita vel, it is popularly know with many common names like Giloy, Guduchi, Gulanchae, Shindilakodi etc. Meaning of Amrita vel is vine of immortality. It is very ancient Ayurvedic medicinal herb which is mentioned as divine herb in precious scriptures like Sushruta Samhita. It is an Indian medicinal plant that has been used in preparation of ayurvedic medicines for the treatment of various ailments for centuries. Its stem is used in dyspepsia, fever and urinary diseases and leaf and roots posse immune boosting and other properties.

Giloy is considered to posses several properties like anti inflammatory, immune-modulatory, anti-oxidant, anti-hyperglycemia, anti-hyperlipidemia, anti-tuberculosis, anti-tumor, hepat-protection, anti-osteoporotic, anti-angiogenic, anti-malarial, anti-allergic, anti-spasmodic and anti-pyretic.

In more common words Giloy is used for controlling diabetes, balancing high cholesterol levels, getting rid of allergic rhinitis (hey or chronic fever), settle the upset stomach, gout, lymphoma and other cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, peptic ulcer disease, fever, gonorrhea, syphilis, to boost the immune system.

There are no evidences of adverse effect but its not advised to take Giloy during the pregnancy.

Giloy might lower blood sugar levels, take a doctor advice before taking it in diabetes.

Giloy might cause the immune system to become more active during autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), take a doctor advice before taking Giloy if you have symptom of these diseases.

It is not advised to take Giloy during or after few weeks of surgery as it might affect blood sugar levels.
